چکیده

3D scanners, iso-surface extraction procedures, and several recent geometric compression schemes sample surfaces of 3D shapes in a regular fashion, without any attempt to align the samples with the sharp edges and corners of the original shape. Consequently, the interpolating triangle meshes chamfer these sharp features and thus exhibit significant errors. The new Edge-Sharpener filter introduced here identifies the chamfer edges and subdivides them and their incident triangles by inserting new vertices and by forcing these vertices to lie on intersections of planes that locally approximate the smooth surfaces that meet at these sharp features. This post-processing significantly reduces the error produced by the initial sampling process. For example, we have observed that the L error introduced by the SwingWrapper remeshing-based compressor can be reduced down to a fifth by executing Edge-Sharpener after decompression, with no additional information.

Modeling and 3D object reconstruction by implicitly defined surfaces with sharp features

We propose a new method for describing sharp features (i.e., edges and vertices) of implicitly defined surfaces. We consider an initial implicitly defined surface, which is represented as the zero set of a C1 smooth scalar field with non–vanishing gradients. In order to represent sharp edges and vertices, this surface is augmented by adding new types of implicit representations, called edge des...

A Fast Algorithm for Computing Irreducible Triangulations of Closed Surfaces in E and Its Application to the TriQuad Problem

Let S be a compact surface with empty boundary. A classical result from the 1920s by Tibor Radó asserts that every compact surface with empty boundary (usually called a closed surface) admits a triangulation [1]. Let e be any edge of a triangulation T of S . The contraction of e in T consists of contracting e to a single vertex and collapsing each of the two triangles meeting e into a single ed...

Adaptive Lp inversion to recover both blocky and smooth features

Inversion based on L2 norm has been widely used in geophysical problems. However, L2 inversion is only capable of recovering smooth features. To obtain sharp boundaries, non-L2 inversion has been used successfully. In reality, however, both smooth and blocky features can be present in the subsurface physical property or interfaces to be recovered. To deal with this situation, we propose a new m...

Transforming triangulations of polygons on non planar surfaces

We consider whether any two triangulations of a polygon on a non-planar surface with a given metric can be transformed into each other by a sequence of edge flips. The answer is negative in general with some remarkable exceptions, such as the cylinder and the flat torus.

Sharpen&Bend: Recovering curved sharp edges in triangle meshes produced by feature- insensitive sampling

Various acquisition, analysis, visualization and compression approaches sample surfaces of 3D shapes in a uniform fashion, without any attempt to align the samples with sharp edges or to adapt the sampling density to the surface curvature. Consequently, triangle meshes that interpolate these samples usually chamfer sharp features and exhibit a relatively large error in their vicinity. We presen...
